Organizational Risk Assessment

Being in business for yourself can be one of the most rewarding experiences that any individual can have.  That said, owning your own business is not for the faint of heart as the risk associated with owning your own business seems never ending. To start with, most people only equate a businesses financial loss if the business fails and most businesses do.  The truth is a business owner's financial commitment only continues to increase as the business meets with success and scales grows.  Business needs (employees, facilities, vehicles, insurance, the products your company hauls or services you provide, etc.) expand as a business grows and all those components of a business have potential risk associated with them and that the business owner is ultimately responsible for.

Let JTB Logistics review your organizational risk and provide possible mitigation solutions to address any risk before they become problems for you and your business.

I look at risk associated with:

Human Resources

In today's litigious society it’s easy to say something or do something that seems innocuous and the next thing you know you find yourself in a legal dispute that costs you time and money. From what you pay someone to how and what you communicate to them, businesses must conform and comply with Federal, State and your own company guidelines or laws. Depending on the size of your business, this area in smaller businesses does not get proper regular attention and thus can be a significant risk.

Business Models

Regardless if your business is a W-2 model or 100% outsourced JTB Logistics can help ensure that you have all of your bases covered.  Properly supporting the Independent Contractor (IC) model has many moving parts to it and not properly supporting the IC model could result in a misclassification suit against your company.  Your company may also run a hybrid model that includes W-2 employees and IC contractors that service work that might be very similar in nature and cause confusion.

JTB Logistics has three decades of working with all three options described above.  We can minimize your company's risk of being charged for misclassification or fair labor & wage violations.

Recruitment & Retention

Recruiting talented people never stops, your team should always be looking to bring on talent and upgrade your bench.  If you are reactionary and wait until you have a personnel need you run the risk of only finding what the market will bear at that moment in time.  Finding good people is both costly and time consuming, so once you find a good employee it's imperative to retain them.

Transparently providing each employee expectations of what they are expected to do, what they will be compensated.  Ensuring all employees understand when they are expected to work and for how long will help avoid confusion.  Lastly, some form of incentivization (positive recognition; bonuses; time off; etc.) that results in desired outcomes.

JTB Logistics can help you develop a plan to incent the behavior you need for success.

Progressive Discipline

Leaders and managers will agree good communication, supportive coaching and good follow-up will usually work very effectively to pull employees back in line if issues arise.  That said, when you don’t get the desired outcomes or when employees don’t follow policy or procedure and while you continue to coach employees, progressive discipline used correctly can help to modify behavior and get employees back in sync too.  It's important to properly document conversations; write-ups or terminations in detail so that as things escalate, you can demonstrate and document what’s been asked of the employee.  The company must make every effort to ask the employee to modify their behavior and clearly help develop a plan together to get the desired outcome for all.

JTB Logistics has developed and deployed progressive discipline plans for many companies large and small.  We would welcome the chance to help your company develop a plan for you.

Insurance Coverages

Insurance is one of those necessary evils that all companies need but truly hope they never have to use. To that end, many businesses go under insured or uninsured all together because they don’t want to pay the ever increasing premiums that only continue to escalate. Let JTB Logistics help you evaluate the correct balance of insurance coverages necessary to properly cover your needs.
